NAACP 2021 “Unsung Hero Awardees”


Thomas Roberson


Mr. Roberson is a native of the area and a prior military officer. Mr. Roberson was instrumental in the creation and implementation of many programs within the NAACP as the branch President, the branch Vice-President, Treasurer, Freedom Fund Secretary and as a Medical Assistant/ Adviser for more than 25 years. He was instrumental in the creation of the branch’s Rites of Passage for Young Men.





 
“Buck” Buckner


Mr. Buckner is the owner of Buck Styles Barbershop since 1993. He is being commended by the NAACP as a hero for his commitment and untiring efforts to support community youth through camp sponsorships, free grooming, childcare, voter registration and mentoring inmates at Pamunkey regional jail.










 
Brenda Dobbin



Ms. Dobbin works for Mary Washington Hospital and CVS Warehouse. She is being commended by the NAACP as a hero for her on-going contributions to the Rites of Passage Program and as the Special Event Coordinator for Zion Hill; spearheading the ZHBC Back2School and Christmas Giveaway program.







 
Dwight Hargrove

Rev. Hargrove is the Pastor at Zion Hill Baptist Church, a U.S. Marine Corps veteran, and works at the Rappahannock Electric Cooperative. He is being commended by the NAACP as a hero for his on-going activism and through his leadership, he serves the community by championing programs that support underserved Spotsylvania residents, and he supports the NAACP providing transportation to the polls and helping coordinate the Rites of Passage Program.



 
Paul Lewis



Mr. Paul Lewis is a U.S. Army veteran who has been an activist in the Civil Rights Movement and with the labor union. He is being commended by the NAACP as a hero for the lifelong commitment to betterment of our community and for his servant heart. For 13 years he has volunteered with the Rappahannock Area Community Food Bank, and consistently supports the NAACP at the polls and with the Rites of Passage Program.






 
Percy Lewis


Mr. Percy Lewis is a U.S. Air Force veteran, a Civil Rights Movement activist and a Laborer District Council member for 50 years. He has served at the Rappahannock Area Community Food Bank for 13 years. He consistently supports the NAACP as a volunteer driver to the polls and with the Rites of Passage Program.









 



Mr. Minor is a retired carpenter and crane operator with Hidder Carr Masonry and more recently as a grounds keeper with Spotsylvania County Schools. He is being commended by the NAACP as a hero for his dedication in providing help with carpentry and mechanical repair in the community and giving food from his garden to youth and neighbors.







 
Ms. Ida Lewis

Ms. Ida Lewis attended Piney Branch schoolhouse, which is now a historical landmark.  She worked as a domesticated worker for 8 to 10 families in Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania County.  Ms. Ida has served on many ministries at Piney Branch including, The Women’s Ministry, The Missionary Ministry, Willing Worker’s Club, and the Pulpit Committee for the Flowers.  She is one of the oldest members of Piney Branch and is considered a “Mother of the Church.” She is a long-time member of the NAACP.



 

Clifton Johnson

Clifton Johnson is a Trustee at First New Hope Baptist Church and has served as Chair of Trustee’s ministry for more than 20 years. He is being commended by the NAACP as a hero for this Trustee commitment, his contributions to the Rights of Passage Program, and his selfless service helping seniors in the community with their landscape upkeep.





 
Roland E. Fairchild


Roland E. Fairchild is a native of the area and has been serving the community for over 40 years as the primary grave digger for the county and the surrounding areas. He is known for his willingness to work with families, churches and the community to ensure their loved is placed in their final resting place in a respectful manner. Roland is a member of the historical Fairchild family in Spotsylvania.




 


Shaun Jones

Shaun Jones currently serves as the Assistant Chief of Police for the Town of Middleburg Police Department. He was formerly a Lieutenant in the Spotsylvania Sheriff’s Office. Year after year Lt. Jones would sacrifice his own time to supported the NAACP in its implementation of the Rites of Passage for Young Men program. He would also come to the branch’s monthly meeting and provide updates and information on the sheriff activities and the upcoming youth events. The NAACP commend and salute Assistant Chief Shaun Jones for his commitment and dedication in his career, to the NAACP and the Spotsylvania community.

The Spotsylvania NAACP commends and salute the Fredericksburg Regional Food Bank for its unwavering dedication, strong commitment and exceptional service, as well as successfully achieving their mission, while continually meeting their vision throughout Planning District 16, Locust Grove and its neighboring communities. A job well done!


The Spotsylvania NAACP commends and salute the Black Lives Matter Fredericksburg Region Group for their courage and willingness to confront racism, injustice and those in authority that abuse their power. Your courageous action is recognized and greatly appreciated and has contributed to making lives better for the citizens of Fredericksburg and the surrounding areas. 


The Spotsylvania NAACP commends and salute the Family Life Center for its unwavering dedication, strong commitment and exceptional service especially to the disenfranchise, underprivilege and those experiencing challenges and difficulties in their lives throughout Planning District 16, Locust Grove and its neighboring communities. A job well done!


The Spotsylvania NAACP commends and salute the Brisben Center for its unwavering dedication, strong commitment and the exceptional service they provide to the homeless and those that are experiencing challenges in life.  The humanitarian services they provide are well recognized and greatly appreciated throughout Fredericksburg and the surrounding area.
