*Branch Collaborated With the Sheriff and Commonwealth Attorney to Address Citizens
Brandishing Weapons on Person’s Simply Turning Around on Their Property! Over the past three years there have been several incidents involving persons having a weapon pulled on them when they entered a person's property to turn around. One case resulted in shots being fired and a bullet striking a vehicle driven by a teenager who was lost and entered a driveway to turn around. After consultation with the sheriff and the commonwealth, it was determined that they would put forth efforts to educate citizens on VA law dictating
threats of bodily harm and the appropriate use of deadly force.
It was noted that VA law states “A deadly weapon may not be brandished solely in defense of personal property, and an owner of land has no right to threaten a mere trespasser with a
deadly weapon” However, A person has a right to use force for the protection of their property, but the force must be reasonable in relation of the harm threatened” It was also
noted that the Virginia law indicates; force that endangers human life or does great bodily harm, or that threatens human life or great bodily harm, is an unreasonable use of force
when use in defense of property. (please review article published by Fredericksburg Free Press; Subject “Spotsylvania authorities aim to arm citizens with knowledge” dated March 20, 2024)
*NOTE: BRANCH WILL RESUME IN-PERSON MONTHLY MEETINGS ON MAY 2ND!

*Please Attend School Board and Board of Supervisors Meetings. This is the time of year when both the school board and board of supervisors are developing their budgets. The school board has requested 46 millions additional dollars from last year's budget to address its real needs and requirements. We are encouraging every citizen to employ their representative on the Board of Supervisor to review the budget and address the school request with due diligence and support its efforts to meet the school division
needs. For more information please contact your school board representative.
*The W.H.Y. Program Needs More Community Members Participation! The Spotsylvania NAACP is looking for more members of the community to volunteer to help in its “We are Here for You” (W.H.Y) initiative. The program was started after an increase in fighting among
students at the end of the 2023 school year. The W.H.Y. program participants are only there to provide an adult present in the school. They are not there for discipline, to monitor or
control, just to support kids and provide a positive adult present in the school. If you or someone you know are interested in volunteering for the W.H.Y. program, please
contact President Petway at 540.847.7637.
