*Although Local Governments Provide Over Fifteen (15) Million Taxpayer Dollars to the Rappahannock Regional Jail (RRJ) for Operations, it is Resistant to Adding a Human/Civil Rights Position to Its Governing Body! The RRJ governing body (Jail Authority Board) has no minority members on its board. However, when asked to create a position that would ensure a representative from the minority community would always be on the board, the board appeared to hide behind their outdated initial guidelines, which indicate person(s) serving on the board should be a government official. Bottom line, if the board wanted to have a permanent position for a person of color on the board, they could take whatever measures necessary to create a position ie. adhoc, appointment, special order, etc... it could get done! We believe the Governor, DOC and the Criminal Justice arena would support it. Note: Please view July & August Newsletters for more details.
*The March Against Voter Suppression on August 28 in Fredericksburg Was a Success! In an effort to show support and raise awareness of the need to ensure legislatures know, that people are concerned about the actions being taken by state governments to limit and restrict voter opportunities, the branch conducted a march to show solidarity with other marches around the nation against voter suppression. (see your email for photos of the march).
